Parking.

Bowness Knoot car par offers the best access for biking up the valley however you can park at Bleach Green car park and bike along the lake shore path to Bowness Knott.

Suitability

There are no purpose built mountain bike trails in Ennerdale. However the forest roads in the valley bottom have few steep gradients and are generally wide enough to ride side by side. The steepest section is the first 350m between the car park and lake shore.

Please be aware that the forest roads can be potholed and lose gravel surfaces increase braking time and reduce control. Mountain bikes with good tread are recommended.

Traffic

Traffic levels are low but please keep a look out for agricultural and forestry traffic and service vehicles especially between Bowness Knott car park and the Youth Hostel and Field Centre at Gillerthwaite.

Bridleways

There are a number of bridleways that cross the valley from north to south linking to other valleys. Whilst it is legally acceptable to bike these, users should be sure of their abilities and equipment before doing so as they all climb and descend through very demanding terrain and often have very poor surfaces.
