The Forest of Ennerdale is one of the valleys Big Four features along with the Mountain, Lake and River Liza. Our management of the Big Forest is aimed at allowing it to develop as a more diverse habitat with a dynamic mosaic of mixed species, open glades, dense patches, cathedral sized big trees, deadwood, open woodland, windblown trees and of course wildlife and people.

For more information please read our Forestry statement from our Stewardship Plan.

Latest Harvesting News

Extracting timber on HeckbarleyTimber harvesting has halted temporarily in Heckbarley at the western end of the valley over winter as the wet Autumn conditions have made working the site difficult.

It has not been decided how much of this area will be replanted and with what species. This is part of our public review of the Wild Ennerdale Stewardship Plan which is currently underway..

However in June 2011 we invited around 30 individuals and representative of organisations to discuss future options for Heckbarley. The discussion identified that the site was large enough to accommodate multiple opportunities and that there should not be just one future land use but a mosaic of native woodland, heath land, scrub and open grazing. We will build this into our Stewardship Plan review and present this as part of our ideas in early 2012.

Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience that this work causes. Should you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact Gareth Browning on 0771 2751060 or by email.
