Volunteering

The Wild Ennerdale Volunteer Group offers the opportunity for local people to get involved in rewarding practical work, improving health and well being, learn more about Ennerdale and meet like minded people in the fantastic setting of a wild valley.

Can I get involved:

We would love to be able to offer everyone who is interested the opportunity to volunteer in Ennerdale. Unfortunately we have reached our limit in terms of available resources, equipment and staff support and are currently not able to offer any new volunteer opportunities.

When do we meet:

Our volunteers meet every Tuesday (except over Christmas and New Year) at around 9.30am at our Broadmoor base. The day usually finishes back at Broadmoor around 3pm to 4pm unless the weather intervenes.

What do we do:

Volunteers get involved in a wide range of work including path maintenance, bridge building, walling, Pine martin and butterfly conservation, visitor surveys, tree planting and archaeology restoration.

Who provides what:

Whilst many volunteers provide their own tools and equipment the Wild Ennerdale Partnership provides tools, equipment, materials and protective clothing such as gloves and glasses. The Partnership also helps out with transport around the valley and provides supervision and a work plan.

Volunteers provide their time and need to bring their own steel toe capped boots or wellington’s. Suitable outdoor clothing including waterproofs must also be brought and normally a packed lunch although the Partnership sometimes provides food as well.

Support and thanks:

Wild Ennerdale is very grateful to the Lake District National Park and for the West Cumbria Rivers Trust for supporting the volunteers many of whom are also National Park Volunteers and give up significant time helping to protect the special qualities of the Lake District
